How to prepare for your trip

If you’re a beginner, just come with a learning mindset because our guides will put you on to manageable fish for your level of expertise, and patiently teach you what you need to know for a great day on the water.

For more experienced anglers, the bottom line for getting ready for your trip is practice, practice and more practice. We can help you sort out details for coming down to Holbox and will take care of putting you on the fish, but when your guide has spotted a school of rolling giant tarpon and your heart starts pounding, things will get exciting fast and the moment of truth will crystallize before your eyes. He’ll give you the go, say for 11:00, 60 feet and that cast is going to be on you. Or maybe you’re in the lagoon 20 feet off the mangroves and he says “Now! A couple of feet into that hole at 10:00” and you’ll prefer not to fall short or hang your fly in the bushes.

Needless to say, it’s all a process and no one’s going to land every fish they cast to, but an open mind and practice before you get here will make a huge difference. There is something for every kind of angler on Holbox, and the more you practice before you get here, the more fun you’ll have with it.

What to expect

You can choose to fish alone with your guide or to take two people per boat, it’s up to you. We’ll make arrangements ahead of time to either pick you up on the beach at your hotel, or you can meet us on the Tarpon Club Beach at 6:00 a.m. Whether you head out along the north shore or go around the island and skirt the lagoon side to the south, be ready for a spectacular sunrise as you approach the fishing grounds. It’s about a 45 minute ride into the rising sun before your unforgettable day fishing with us.

We’ll take a break around 10:30. We provide a box lunch for you with sandwiches, chips, cookies, and water and soda. If you have any dietary restrictions, just let us know ahead of time and we’ll take care of you. After lunch you’ll still have a few hours left to make the most of the day, until about 2:00 p.m., when you’ll head back to the beach.
